Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are known for having some of the best beaches for shelling.
From the Lighthouse to North Captiva, the beaches are made out of a variety of shells.
Types of shells found on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island:
- Conch Shells
- Junonia Shells
- Lightning Whelk Shells
- Cockle Shells
- Tulip Shells
- Sand Dollar Shells
- Olive Shells
- And Coquinas Shells
It is a general rule that the shells are smaller near the Lighthouse and bigger near Captiva Island.
The best time to shell is during low tide. Make sure to bring a bucket and a scoop. It is important that you do not collect live shells.
